Final destination - that’s how we know we have succeeded

Road trips are a personal favorite way to travel.  Flying is my absolute favorite, but I don’t mind cruising in a car…with the right people.  Planning a road trip can be tricky.  When you fly in a plane, once your board you stay put until landing.  But a road trip can have a lot of stops along the way – potty breaks, gas breaks, snacks and motion sickness.  Road trips allow you to measure progress by mile marker, terrain changes and the amount of time that elapses.  When you see that “Welcome to XX” sign, you know you have arrived.  Mission accomplished, and now the fun begins.

The financial coaching relationship is similar.  Unlike traveling from 30,000 feet in the air, the coach and client have a front row seat to the journey.  The client is firmly in the driver’s seat, but they are looking at you to help navigate.  The duration of the trip differs from client to client, but the practitioner marks out a plan to get the client there with periodic check-ins along the way.  Moments to be encouraged to carry on – think fuel breaks.  Opportunities to grab tasty snacks – think celebrating milestones.  I don’t have a quality analogy for potty breaks other than taking care of the work that needs to be done.  So, moving on!  😊

Based on the initial discussions, once a client reaches reduced debt, a workable budget, a purchased home or car, an open investment account, regular contributions to a retirement account, having the hard discussion with loved ones about estate planning or stabilized savings plan, you know that you have arrived at your desired destination.  It is time to deboard and appreciate a well-traveled road and a job well done.  The coach and client should discuss what the end of the relationship looks like.  What is the expectation if the client needs assistance in the future or is there a set schedule of check-ins or referrals to any additional support necessary.

Coaches release successful clients with joy because they have witnessed their clients grow and come into their own financially.  50% uncomfortable is acknowledging that you may have a desired destination, but no clear navigation plan.  Don’t remain stuck.  StudioM is here to help.  letstalk@studiomfinancial.net or (469) 615-0387.  Until we meet, keep working on the change.
